Fibroids- that scary word you hear and assume the worst. As awful as they sound - fibroids are a common condition that up to half of us can experience. 

What are fibroids?

Fibroids are muscular tumors that grow in the wall of the uterus. Fibroids are almost always benign, meaning that they are not cancerous). Fibroids can grow as a single tumor, or there can be many of them. They can be as small as an apple seed or as big as a grapefruit- although very large fibroids are more unusual. 

What are the symptoms?

Some people experience:

• Heavy bleeding (which can be heavy enough to cause iron deficiency) or intense, often painful periods
• Feeling of fullness in the pelvic area (lower stomach area)
• Enlargement of the lower abdomen
• Frequent urination
• Pain during sex
• Lower back pain
• Complications during pregnancy and labor, including a six-time greater risk of having to have a cesarian birth
• Reproductive problems, like infertility which is rare, but can happen.
