I know I know, every month there is more news coming out about period care and how many disgusting things these corporations are putting in them. From PFAs and now the fuss about glyphosate, a cancer causing pesticide- it's like every month we have something else we have to be afraid of.
But we at Rif Care knew there were pesticides in period care, which is why we started making organic, pesticide free period care for your health and well being.
A recent investigation by The Guardian revealed that tampons sold in the UK contained glyphosate—a pesticide linked to cancer—at levels 40 times higher than the legal limit for drinking water . Let that sink in. A product designed to be inserted into one of the most absorbent parts of our bodies contains a chemical that's not even safe to drink. This isn't just about one harmful chemical. Other studies have found heavy metals like lead and arsenic in tampons. These substances can disrupt our hormonal balance, affect reproductive health, and have long-term health implications.
The best way to avoid these chemicals is to use organic cotton, that does not use chemical sprays and finishes (hello, Rif Care tampons!)
What's even more alarming is the lack of regulation. In the U.S., the FDA classifies tampons as medical devices, which means manufacturers aren't required to disclose their ingredients or test for contaminants like pesticides and heavy metals. This regulatory gap leaves us vulnerable and uninformed about the products we use monthly. This rule needs to be overturned immediately!
As someone deeply invested in this industry, I feel a profound responsibility to advocate for change. We need transparency, stricter regulations, and accountability from manufacturers. Our health should never be compromised for convenience or profit.
So, what can we do?
-
Demand Transparency: Reach out to period product companies and ask about their ingredient sourcing and testing protocols.
-
Support Clean Brands: Choose products from companies that prioritize safety, transparency, and sustainability.
-
Advocate for Change: Contact your local representatives and urge them to push for stricter regulations on period products.
Our bodies deserve better. Let's stand together and demand the safety and respect we deserve.
