Quick Answer
Carefree panty liners are facing a lawsuit alleging the presence of PFOA, a PFAS “forever chemical” linked to cancer and reproductive toxicity. While the case is ongoing, it has raised broader concerns about chemical transparency in menstrual products worn for long periods of time.
Why We Started Rif Care
The reason we started Rif Care is because we know most brands, especially non organic ones are made with plastic top sheets, which have BPA and PFA. The new lawsuit is an eye opener for many about what's really in period products.
One of the top brands in the country, Carefree panty liners, contain a chemical known to cause cancer and reproductive toxicity, exposing women to a dangerous and nearly indestructible chemical, a lawsuit filed Monday alleges. Although we don't sell panty liners (yet), we sell other products like period undies.
Prolonged Exposure and Health Risks
As one of the top brands in the country, Carefree panty liners pose a significant health concern due to their prolonged contact with the vaginal area, which is highly susceptible to absorbing harmful chemicals directly into the bloodstream, the lawsuit alleges.
Attorney Vineet Dubey, representing Ecological Alliance LLC, stated:
“PFOA is a known reproductive toxin and no amount is considered safe. This synthetic chemical accumulates over time in the human body, leading to adverse reproductive effects such as decreased fertility and hormone interference. Additionally, it can increase hypertension in pregnant women. Women use this product for 8 to 10 hours at a time, which results in continuous exposure to PFOA, potentially on a daily basis.”
Women may use these products for 8 to 10 hours at a time, resulting in continuous exposure.

Long-Term Concerns Linked to PFOA
According to the lawsuit, PFOA can remain in the body for up to 50 years and may increase the likelihood of:
-
Low birth weight in infants
-
Developmental delays
-
Kidney, prostate, or testicular cancer
Growing Scrutiny of Period Products
National awareness around PFAS and toxic metals in menstrual products continues to grow.
Recent studies published in 2024 found that multiple brands of tampons—both in the U.S. and Europe—contained harmful metals such as lead, arsenic, and mercury.
Menstrual products, which come into prolonged contact with sensitive tissue, may pose significant risks when harmful chemicals are present.
Why Ingredient Transparency Matters
Consumers often assume products made in the U.S. meet stringent safety standards. However, this lawsuit highlights that harmful chemicals can still be present.
Ingredient transparency is especially critical for products designed for daily, intimate use.
