What Is The Follicular Phase?

What Is The Follicular Phase?

What Is The Follicular Phase?

A woman's menstrual cycle has different phases. One of these phases is the follicular phase. This phase of your menstrual cycle is the longest one, it lasts from 14 to 21 days. The follicular phase comes just before your ovulation phase which is when your body is most fertile. During the follicular phase, your ovaries house a maturing egg which is later released during the ovulation period. This is the reason why the odds of getting pregnant at the end of the follicular phase are also pretty high.

The follicular phase begins on the first day of your periods and lasts till the ovulation which is when one of the ovaries releases an egg. When your follicular phase begins, the follicles (fluid-filled sacs in your ovaries) carry an immature egg. The follicular phase is typically the longest. During the maturing of an egg, one of the follicles is called a dominant follicle since it houses an egg that is healthier and bigger than the rest.

When your ovulation period starts, the dominant follicle releases the egg. The start of the ovulations means that the longest phase of the cycle is over and hence the luteal phase of your cycle has begun. When eggs are released by your ovaries, it travels to your fallopian tubes. This is where an egg gets fertilized. When a follicular phase ends an ovulation period begins, and the dominant follicle is transformed into a structure called corpus luteum which is responsible for releasing pregnancy hormones. If the egg doesn't get fertilized, then you are not pregnant, the corpus luteum disappears and you shed your uterus lining (in short, you will get your period, and the entire thing will repeat)

What Happens During The Follicular Phase?

It's a misconception that your body produces eggs once your reproductive years start. You are born with about a million eggs. However, it is not until you start your periods, that your body starts maturing these eggs. During your lifetime, only a select few eggs are matured. Once your follicular phase starts, 11 to 14 eggs start developing and out of all these developing eggs, only one matures.

This whole process is heavily dependent on hormones released by your brain and your body. The pituitary gland in your brain releases a hormone called the Follicle Stimulating Hormone. This hormone gives a signal to your ovaries to start producing eggs. A dominant follicle in your ovaries produces an egg faster than the other follicles and releases it once your ovulation period starts. Then a proliferative phase starts. During this phase, the dominant follicle releases more estrogen in your body which thickens your uterus lining so that a fertilized egg could be implanted there. Once the estrogen level increases, the pituitary gland stops producing the hormones and hence a mature egg is released at the end of the follicular phase.

It is very important to know your follicular phase and how it works. It will improve your odds of getting pregnant and understanding your period cycle.
