An average woman uses almost 12 beauty products every morning that contain more than 168 chemicals. This is consistent exposure to chemicals and toxins that can affect their endocrine system. The endocrine system is our hormonal system which includes pituitary glands, ovaries, thyroid, hypothalamus, pancreas, and adrenal that are responsible for producing hormonal necessary to carry out basic body functions. Studies have shown that certain chemicals in our makeup products disrupt our hormones and cause side effects like weight gain, mood swings, anxiety, and skin issues.

This is why reading labels is important –and not just food labels, but also beauty product labels. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) can impact the production, balance, elimination, and breakdown of important hormones. So yes, makeup can mess up your hormones. But only if you use the wrong kind of makeup. Here are some common endocrine disruptors that are used in your makeup products.

  1. Fragrance and Scents

Products containing fragrances are a big no. These makeup products usually have a hormone-disrupting effect and can also cause asthma, allergies, headaches, and dizziness. While buying makeup, you should always go for fragrance-free products. They won't irritate your skin and are healthier for your hormones.

  1. Mercury

Mercury is a very harmful substance. Not only will it mess up your hormones, but with body accumulation over time, it will cause serious damage to the brain and nervous system.

  1. Diethylene Glycol

It is a depressant and can also cause damage to the liver and kidneys. Glycerin and Propylene Glycol are often contaminated with Diethylene glycol. These are some of the most commonly used ingredients in skincare and makeup.

  1. Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde has been banned in most countries due to its effects on endocrine and nervous system. It's a well-known carcinogen that is most commonly used in hair dyes, nail polishes, and adhesives. It is also found in makeup products and some shampoos.

  1. Lead

You know that sparkle and 'diamond dust' in your skincare and makeup product? Yeah, that's no diamond dust, it's metals and lead. This is extremely cancerous and is commonly used in eyeliners, lipsticks, and eye shadows.

  1. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

You should know that any makeup product containing sulfate will mess up your hormones and your skin. However, sodium lauryl sulfate is found in almost 90% of all makeup products. It is a former industrial greaser which is now used to make soaps. This product is absorbed by your body and can damage your endocrine system.

  1. Oxybenzone

This substance is found in a lot of non-medicated sun protection creams. It accumulates over time and causes skin cancer as well as hormonal imbalances. While protecting yourself against the sun is important, make sure you are using natural minerals and zinc protection creams.

  1. Parabens

Parabens are excessively used both in makeup and in period products as preservatives. Studies have detected that the use of parabens is linked with breast cancer and excessive estrogen production.

If you are suffering from hormonal imbalance, it is very important to detox. Get rid of toxic products that might be damaging your hormonal balance.
